1. What is NJ-COSA?

NJ-COSA (NPO Joint Collaboration of South Africa) is a registered (Reg No: 314-024) national umbrella body that brings together NPOs, NPCs, Cooperatives and Faith-Based Organisations to strengthen community development, improve compliance, unlock funding opportunities and promote sustainable economic transformation.

2. What is the main purpose of NJ-COSA?

NJ-COSA exists to unite community organisations, enhance their capacity, promote good governance, facilitate partnerships, attract funding, and ensure that grassroots initiatives actively contribute to South Africa’s development agenda.

3. Who can join NJ-COSA?

Any legally registered NPO, NPC, Cooperative or Faith-Based Organisation operating in South Africa and working in community development may apply for membership.

4. What are the benefits of becoming a member?

Members receive:

5. Does NJ-COSA provide funding to members?

NJ-COSA does not issue direct grants but facilitates access to funding by linking members with donors, funders, government programs and consortium opportunities.

6. How do we apply for membership?

You can apply by completing the NJ-COSA membership application form available on our website and submitting your organisation’s registration and compliance documents.

7. Does NJ-COSA charge any membership or subscription fees?

Yes. For sustainability and continued service delivery, NJ-COSA operates on a yearly renewable membership affiliation fee as well as a monthly subscription fee. These contributions support administrative operations, compliance assistance, capacity building programmes, advocacy, training, member services and the coordination of development initiatives to ensure uninterrupted service delivery to all affiliated organisations.

8. Can NJ-COSA help with compliance and registration?

Yes. NJ-COSA assists members with:
 -NPO/NPC/Cooperative registration
 -PBO applications
 -CSD registration
 -Policy development
 -Annual reporting compliance

9. Does NJ-COSA assist with proposal writing?

Yes. Members receive professional support with proposal writing, business planning, project design, monitoring and evaluation frameworks.

11. Is NJ-COSA aligned with national and global development goals?

12. Is NJ-COSA legally recognised to operate as a national umbrella body?

Yes. NJ-COSA is lawfully established and operates within South Africa’s legislative framework. Its mandate is supported by the Co-operatives Act 14 of 2005 (Section 15), the Non-Profit Organisations Act 71 of 1997 (Sections 4 and 7) and the Companies Act 71 of 2008 (Sections 19 and 21). These Acts permit the formation of federations, unions and coordinating support bodies that provide collective governance, development coordination and social benefit services. This provides NJ-COSA with a clear legal basis to function as a recognised national umbrella body for cooperatives, NPOs, NPCs and faith-based organisations.

13. Does NJ-COSA represent its members?

Yes. NJ-COSA acts as an advocate and representative for members in engagements with government departments, municipalities, donors and private sector partners.

14. Does NJ-COSA support youth, women and people with disabilities?

Yes. NJ-COSA prioritises inclusive development by promoting youth-led, women-led and disability-inclusive organisations.

15. How does NJ-COSA’s coordination model contribute to development in South Africa?

NJ-COSA’s coordination model is based on successful international practices observed in countries such as Germany, Singapore, South Korea, Canada and the United Kingdom, where development is accelerated by formally coordinating cooperatives, non-profit organisations, faith-based organisations and small enterprises under recognised national umbrella bodies partnered with government.

This umbrella coordination improves governance, speeds up service delivery, creates sustainable employment opportunities, strengthens public–private partnerships, accelerates rural and township development, and contributes to measurable poverty reduction. NJ-COSA seeks to institutionalise this proven development approach to support inclusive growth and national development priorities in South Africa.
